Mrs. Ogor Tony-Obuh, wife of the late Delta State governorship aspirant, Sir Tony Obuh, has emerged as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Delta State House of Assembly following a decisive victory in the party’s primary election.
The primary, held at the NDC Secretariat in Agbor on Friday, generated widespread excitement among party members and supporters, with celebrations erupting across parts of the metropolis after the declaration of results.
Mrs. Tony-Obuh secured a commanding 287 votes to defeat three other aspirants in what party officials and observers described as a keenly contested but peaceful exercise.
Her closest challenger, Mr. Oriehi Destiny, polled 101 votes, while Mr. Eugene Orewa garnered 40 votes and Mr. Kennedy Oyeason secured 32 votes.
The outcome effectively positions Mrs. Tony-Obuh as the NDC flag bearer for the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking shortly after her emergence, the victorious candidate expressed gratitude to party delegates and members for the confidence reposed in her, pledging to work towards strengthening the party and expanding its support base ahead of the polls.
She said the overwhelming mandate reflected the collective aspiration of party faithful for purposeful representation and inclusive development.
According to her, the support received during the primary has further strengthened her resolve to champion the interests of the constituency and provide effective representation if elected into the Delta State House of Assembly.
“The confidence reposed in me by our party members is both humbling and inspiring. This victory belongs to every member of our great party and to the people who desire progress, unity, and quality representation,” she said.
Mrs. Tony-Obuh added that she would continue to engage stakeholders across the constituency in pursuit of a shared vision for growth and development.
Reacting to the outcome, a prominent NDC stakeholder, Mr. Paul Etumudor, described the result as a reflection of the delegates’ trust in Mrs. Tony-Obuh’s leadership qualities and commitment to public service.
He noted that her administrative experience, grassroots appeal, and longstanding relationship with the people place her in a strong position to advance the party’s fortunes in the constituency.
Etumudor expressed confidence that the NDC candidate would attract broad support from voters during the general election campaign.
Observers who monitored the exercise commended the orderly conduct of the primary, noting that the process was peaceful, transparent, and devoid of the disputes often associated with party contests.
With her emergence, political attention is expected to shift to the general election campaign as the NDC intensifies efforts to consolidate its presence and electoral prospects across Delta State ahead of the 2027 polls.
