As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, a coalition of climate and environmental advocates in Nigeria has launched the #Vote4Climate Initiative, urging political parties and aspirants to make climate action a key component of their manifestos.
The campaign seeks to place climate change, environmental sustainability and ecological protection at the centre of political discourse ahead of the elections, with activities expected to extend across Nigeria’s 36 states.
In a statement issued to journalists, the coalition said the initiative was designed to mobilise voters to demand specific and measurable environmental commitments from candidates seeking elective positions.
Head of Communications and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, said the worsening effects of climate change made it imperative for politicians to treat environmental issues as a major development priority rather than a peripheral campaign subject.
According to him, increasing incidents of flooding, drought, desertification, deforestation, extreme temperatures, pollution and water scarcity are placing growing pressure on agriculture, livelihoods, food security and public health.
Yakubu challenged political aspirants to go beyond general promises by presenting practical strategies for addressing the country’s environmental challenges.
He identified tree planting and forest restoration, renewable and clean energy, climate-smart agriculture, effective waste management, flood-control measures and sustainable management of water resources as areas requiring concrete policy attention.
He further urged Nigerian voters, particularly youths, to scrutinise the environmental policies of candidates and support those who demonstrate credible commitment to climate resilience and sustainable development.
The coalition maintained that elevating climate change in the 2027 electoral conversation would compel incoming administrations to adopt long-term measures capable of reducing environmental risks and protecting communities most vulnerable to climate impacts.
The initiative has received support from climate advocates, civil society organisations and environmental groups, including Metro-Environmental Initiative and Green Connection, which are expected to contribute to efforts aimed at increasing public demand for stronger climate commitments from political candidates.
