Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has described the five-year reign of His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, as a period of renewed glory, peace-building, unity and developmental progress for the Itsekiri people, Warri and Delta State.

Oborevwori stated this on Friday at the celebration of the monarch’s fifth coronation anniversary, where he praised the Olu for what he described as exceptional leadership and sustained commitment to peace and development.

The governor said Atuwatse III had distinguished himself as a visionary traditional ruler and peace-builder whose influence extended beyond the Itsekiri Kingdom.

«“The Olu is a cerebral monarch, a peace-builder and an exemplary leader—a man of grace who leads from the front. He has an undying passion for the progress of not just Warri but the entire Delta State,” he said.»

Oborevwori also acknowledged the monarch’s support for his administration, saying the Olu had consistently demonstrated interest in the success of government programmes and projects.

“I want to place it on record that the Olu has taken more than a passing interest in my administration. You have shown your love and support for this administration,” the governor said.

He recalled the occasion when the Itsekiri nation hosted him, noting that the Olu had publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu and his administration, as well as his own administration in Delta State.

According to Oborevwori, the decision was significant given the traditional responsibility of the monarch to remain a father to all.

The governor also highlighted the Olu’s support for infrastructure development, particularly the Ode-Itsekiri Road project, recalling that the monarch was present to receive him during an inspection of the project.

He disclosed that the road, which includes more than 15 bridges, had been completed and would soon be formally commissioned.

Oborevwori said the monarch’s efforts in showcasing the completed road had helped draw attention to the administration’s infrastructure development drive.

He recalled a video of the Olu riding a scooter on a completed section of the road, describing the gesture as symbolic of the transformation taking place in an area previously regarded by many as difficult to access.

The governor said the fifth coronation anniversary was therefore more than a celebration of a traditional milestone, describing it as an opportunity to reflect on five years of impactful leadership and the monarch’s contribution to the development of the state.

Oborevwori, however, used the occasion to appeal to the various ethnic nationalities in Warri to protect the peace and unity that had defined their coexistence over the years.

He noted that the different communities had lived together peacefully for centuries and urged residents to ensure that the tradition of peaceful coexistence was sustained.

The governor cautioned against inflammatory remarks, divisive rhetoric and actions capable of undermining peace and stability in Warri and across Delta State.

Among the dignitaries at the anniversary celebration were Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; Senator Joel-Onowakpo; the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; a representative of the Minister of Aviation; members of the Delta State Executive Council; service commanders; traditional rulers from across the country and other distinguished guests.

In his remarks, delivered as a “Speech from the Throne”, the Olu of Warri attributed the accomplishments recorded during his five-year reign to God, saying the developments witnessed under his leadership were manifestations of divine grace.

The monarch said the influence and responsibilities of the throne extended beyond the Itsekiri nation, expressing his determination to promote excellence within Nigeria’s traditional institution and preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

Ogiame Atuwatse III expressed appreciation to Governors Oborevwori and Sanwo-Olu, government officials, traditional rulers, groups and communities for honouring the anniversary and supporting his reign with prayers and goodwill.
