The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called for comprehensive and sustainable reforms to strengthen the welfare and protection of Nigerian workers as the country commemorates Workers’ Day.

In a statement issued on May 1, the organisation’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, noted that the celebration comes at a period marked by economic strain, rising living costs, and widening inequality, which continues to impact the wellbeing of workers across the country.

CISLAC acknowledged the contributions of Nigeria’s workforce, including members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies, civil servants, private sector employees, and development practitioners, commending their role in sustaining governance, economic activities, and national stability.

The organisation highlighted the resilience of development workers who continue to promote accountability and improved livelihoods despite prevailing challenges.

According to CISLAC, the current situation reflects deeper structural issues within the system, including gaps in public service management and limited access to effective welfare mechanisms.

It stressed the need for policy approaches that deliver long-term benefits to workers and promote inclusive growth.

The group further emphasized that the dignity of labour must be upheld through stronger protections, fair treatment, and improved conditions of service, both during active employment and after retirement.

It called on governments at all levels to prioritise timely payment of salaries, regular promotions, and increased investment in training and capacity development to enhance productivity and service delivery.

CISLAC also encouraged workers to uphold professionalism, discipline, and accountability in their respective roles, noting that collective responsibility is essential to national progress.

The organisation reiterated that a fair and balanced labour system remains critical to economic stability, social justice, and sustainable development, while reaffirming its commitment to advocating policies that support workers and foster an inclusive society.

It extended goodwill to Nigerian workers on the occasion of Workers’ Day, recognising their continued dedication and contributions to nation-building.
