Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has been commended for honouring Nigeria’s Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medallists and football legends, in what has been described as a significant break from decades of unfulfilled promises to the nation’s sporting heroes.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports Development, Hon. Isa Nasidi, gave the commendation in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday in Kaduna.
Nasidi said Governor Sani had demonstrated that Kaduna State values and remembers those who have brought honour to the state and Nigeria through their achievements.
According to him, the Governor’s decision to allocate plots of land and name prominent streets after some of Kaduna’s celebrated football icons represents more than a ceremonial gesture, describing it as a meaningful effort to address a 30-year-old national pledge to members of the victorious Atlanta ’96 team.
Among the football legends honoured are Daniel Amokachi, Celestine Babayaro, Tijjani Babangida, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro.
Nasidi said the initiative followed the Governor’s directive to identify and engage members of the Atlanta ’96 generation and ensure that the state’s recognition translated into tangible benefits.

He said the Governor’s broader sports vision was also reflected in the ongoing reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, where the facility is being upgraded with an expanded seating capacity from 16,000 to 33,000.
The project, he noted, includes a FIFA-standard hybrid pitch, multi-sports courts and modern hostel facilities, which he said would strengthen Kaduna’s position as a major sporting destination and youth-development hub.
Nasidi maintained that the administration was not merely celebrating the achievements of Kaduna’s past football stars but was also creating opportunities for a new generation of athletes to emerge.
“Governor Malam Uba Sani is not just honouring where Kaduna’s football legends came from; he is building the pipeline for the next generation to rise from the same streets,” he said.
The Special Assistant reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Governor’s sports-development agenda through grassroots programmes across the state’s 23 local government areas.
He disclosed that plans also include a talent-hunt initiative designed to identify promising young athletes and create a pathway for them into the revitalised Ahmadu Bello Stadium.
