Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers, describing the workforce as the driving force of governance and economic development.
The governor made the statement on Friday in Asaba during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration, themed “Insecurity, Poverty, Bane of Decent Work.”
Represented by his Deputy, Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori emphasized the need for collective action to address the twin challenges of insecurity and poverty, which he identified as major threats to productivity and sustainable livelihoods.
He noted that insecurity disrupts economic activities and discourages investment, while poverty undermines human dignity and limits access to decent employment opportunities.
According to him, tackling these challenges is essential to restoring the value and dignity of labour.
The governor commended workers across the state and the country for their resilience, dedication, and contributions to development, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to protect their interests and expand opportunities under the MORE Agenda.
Oborevwori highlighted key achievements of his administration over the past three years, including sustained industrial harmony, prompt payment of salaries, regular promotions, and the construction of residential quarters for senior civil servants.
He added that ongoing investments in training, capacity building, and improved working conditions are aimed at strengthening the efficiency and responsiveness of the public service.
He also noted targeted recruitment in critical sectors such as education and healthcare, as well as efforts to enhance social protection through initiatives like the MORE Grant Scheme and the D-CARES programme, which have supported hundreds of thousands of residents.
On pension obligations, the governor stated that his administration has cleared outstanding benefits for state workers and made significant progress at the local government level, underscoring its commitment to retirees’ welfare.
He further reiterated investments in education through bursaries and scholarships, aimed at ensuring access to learning opportunities for all.
Oborevwori stressed that true development goes beyond infrastructure to include the well-being of citizens, noting that a motivated workforce, secure retirees, empowered entrepreneurs, and educated youth are key indicators of progress.
In a joint address, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), led by Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku and Comrade Asekutu Wilson, said the theme of the celebration reflects the pressing realities facing workers and called for sustained efforts to address them.
