Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Chief Dr. Joseph Sisanmi Otumara in Warri, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Delta State and a painful departure of one of the state’s most distinguished political figures and community leaders.
During the visit on Tuesday, Dr. Okowa expressed profound grief over the death of the elder statesman, whom he characterized as a trusted confidant, loyal associate, and dedicated public servant whose contributions to governance and grassroots development left an enduring mark on Delta State.
According to the former governor, Chief Otumara’s life was defined by humility, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people, qualities that earned him respect across political and community divides.
Reflecting on the late politician’s decades of public service, Okowa noted that Chief Otumara played pivotal roles in the development of Warri and other parts of the state through various leadership positions he held during his lifetime.
The deceased served three consecutive terms as Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council and later distinguished himself as Commissioner for Special Duties, Housing, and Health. He also served twice as Chairman of the Warri/Uvwie and Environs Development Commission, where he was credited with championing several infrastructure and development initiatives.
Chief Otumara was equally remembered for his strategic role in Delta State politics, having served as Director-General of Dr. Okowa’s successful 2015 governorship campaign.
Speaking during the condolence visit, the former governor paid glowing tribute to the late political leader, recalling their longstanding friendship and professional relationship.
“We have lost a great statesman, an accomplished politician, and a respected community leader. Dr. Joseph was a dependable friend, ever calm, humane, and committed to the progress of our people. He played a significant role in my journey to Government House, Asaba, and remained a steadfast ally throughout the years.
“Thank you for all you did, Joseph. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Adieu, our brother,” Okowa said.
On arrival at the family residence, the former governor was received by the Head of the Ebisanine Family, Pa Erebo Ebiyon, alongside prominent members of the Warri South Political Family, where the late Otumara was widely revered as a mentor, strategist, and unifying figure.
Dr. Okowa later met with the widow of the deceased, Mrs. Tina Otumara, offering words of comfort and prayers for the family during the difficult period. He encouraged them to draw strength from the remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and selfless dedication left behind by their departed patriarch.
The condolence visit was attended by family members, political associates, community leaders, and sympathisers, many of whom described the late Chief Otumara as a bridge-builder whose influence transcended politics and contributed significantly to peace, development, and unity in Warri and Delta State at large.
Praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased, Dr. Okowa urged the family and associates of the late elder statesman to uphold the values he stood for and take solace in the lasting impact of his service to humanity.
