Issele-Uku Kingdom in Delta State has ushered in a new traditional year with a royal palace gathering that brought together traditional rulers, chiefs and titled elders for the observance of an important cultural rite.
The ceremony, held at the palace of the Ogie-Obi of Issele-Uku, HRM Agbogidi Obi Nduka, JP, MNSE, featured the traditional observance of “Ikpukpo Isi Ewu,” a rite symbolising the conclusion of the outgoing traditional season and the commencement of a new one.
The royal father hosted members of Ogbeleani, Okpalabisis, chiefs and other titled elders, who gathered to mark the occasion and reaffirm the cultural values and traditions of the Issele-Uku people.
A major highlight of the gathering was an interactive session in which Obi Nduka posed a series of traditional questions to the elders, prompting lively debates and exchanges of views.
The discussions involved representatives of Ogbeleani Diokpa Okonkwo Isimchei, Iyase Chief Innocent Etenmua Ashiedu, Okwalegwe Chief (Prof.) John Ochei, Akogwu Chief Francis Ijei, as well as other chiefs and elders representing various interests within the kingdom.
The session provided an avenue for the elders to share knowledge and perspectives on customs, traditions and issues affecting the community, including matters relating to marriage, family life, childbearing and traditional understanding of biological relationships.
Beyond the ceremonial significance, the interaction underscored the role of traditional institutions in preserving indigenous knowledge and providing a platform for intergenerational dialogue.
The gathering ended on a convivial note, with participants describing the palace interaction as engaging and memorable as Issele-Uku formally welcomed the new traditional year.
