Accord Party House of Assembly candidate and advocate for good governance, Ven. Udumebraye Dave Osiobe (CJ), JP, has urged Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to undertake urgent reforms and modernization of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) and Delta Line Transport Services, saying both institutions remain strategic assets that deserve immediate government attention.
Osiobe expressed concern over what he described as the steady decline of the two state-owned establishments, noting that institutions once regarded as symbols of excellence and pride for Deltans have gradually lost their competitive edge due to years of inadequate investment, aging infrastructure and limited adaptation to modern technological realities.
Speaking on the state of DBS, Osiobe said the broadcasting outfit, established as a platform for public enlightenment and government communication, now faces stiff competition from private media organizations that have embraced digital broadcasting and emerging communication technologies.
According to him, the station requires comprehensive upgrades in critical areas, including studio facilities, transmission equipment, digital infrastructure, power supply and online broadcasting platforms to effectively fulfill its mandate of informing, educating and entertaining the people of Delta State.
He noted that DBS remains a vital instrument for promoting government policies, preserving cultural heritage and projecting the image of the state, stressing that modern equipment and technology are essential for the station to remain relevant in an increasingly digital media environment.
“DBS remains one of Delta State’s most important communication assets. In this era of digital media and technological advancement, it is imperative that the station is equipped with modern facilities that will enable it to compete effectively while showcasing the identity, culture and achievements of Delta State to the world,” he said.
Osiobe also lamented the current state of Delta Line, recalling the period when the transport company was widely recognized as one of the most reliable and respected transportation brands in Nigeria.
He said many residents would welcome deliberate efforts to restore the company’s lost glory through the acquisition of modern buses, upgraded terminals, digital ticketing systems and improved operational efficiency.
The cleric further advocated the development of a world-class transport terminal comparable to those operated by leading transport companies in the country, arguing that such infrastructure would significantly improve passenger experience and operational performance.
According to him, a revitalized Delta Line would provide affordable and dependable transportation services, stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and strengthen connectivity within and outside the state.
Osiobe urged Governor Oborevwori to prioritize the repositioning of both institutions in line with the objectives of the administration’s MORE Agenda, emphasizing that strategic investments in DBS and Delta Line would yield significant social and economic benefits for the state.
He maintained that revitalizing the two organizations would strengthen public communication, enhance investor confidence, generate employment and preserve important state-owned institutions that have historically contributed to Delta’s development.
The good governance advocate therefore called on the governor to direct the Ministries of Information and Transportation to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the challenges confronting the organizations and implement practical reforms aimed at restoring their competitiveness and relevance.
“The people of Delta State deserve a modern broadcasting service and an efficient transport company that reflects the aspirations of a progressive state.
“The time has come for decisive action to reposition DBS and Delta Line for the benefit of present and future generations,” Osiobe added.
