The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers after they were found guilty of extortion and professional misconduct for receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station in Asaba.
The disciplinary action followed the conclusion of an orderly room trial ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, who upheld the panel’s findings against Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to ‘C’ Division, Asaba.
The officers were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the police station, an act that sparked widespread public outrage.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
As part of the disciplinary measures, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to the rank of Constable.
CP Oyeniyi reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and other forms of professional misconduct, stressing that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has expressly prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations and formations across the country.
He warned that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, adding that any personnel found engaging in such practices would face severe disciplinary sanctions.
The Commissioner further urged officers and men of the command to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, describing the punishment as a clear demonstration of the command’s commitment to discipline, accountability and restoring public confidence in policing.
He also encouraged residents to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
