A high-powered delegation from the Borno State Government has visited victims, affected families and community leaders in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, reaffirming the state’s commitment to supporting survivors and securing the release of students abducted during the recent attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa.
The delegation, led by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, was constituted by Governor as part of the government’s coordinated response to the tragic incident.
The team commenced its engagements at the Federal Medical Centre, Mubi, where members visited Malam Goni Shettima, a teacher at Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the attack.
Receiving the delegation, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Shuaibu Jauro Yahya, disclosed that the injured teacher was responding to treatment and in stable condition but would require specialised medical care.
Speaking during the visit, Wakilbe conveyed Governor Zulum’s sympathy to the victim and his family, assuring them that the state government would continue to provide the necessary support throughout his recovery.
The delegation later proceeded to the palace of the Emir of Uba, Alhaji Aliyu Ibn Samaila Mamza, where it met with parents of the abducted students.
Addressing the grieving families, Wakilbe acknowledged the emotional pain they have endured and assured them that the government, in collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders, was intensifying efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted students.
He emphasized that the administration remained fully committed to rescuing the children and reuniting them with their families as quickly as possible.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mr. Emmanuel Ayuba and Rev. Simon Wayindu appealed to the state government to redouble its rescue efforts, noting that families have continued to endure severe emotional distress and uncertainty since the attack.
The delegation also visited Mussa Community, where another group of students was abducted during a separate school attack on May 15, 2026.
During the visit, government officials reassured affected families that ongoing rescue operations remained a priority and that every effort was being made to ensure the safe return of the abducted children.
Responding on behalf of the families in Mussa, Mr. Ishaku Jidayi urged the government to accelerate ongoing operations and bring the children home without further delay.
Members of the delegation included the Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Samaila Satumari; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Julian Bitrus; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Projects, Engr. Emmanuel Yerima; Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Suleiman Bello Maina; Education Secretary of Askira/Uba Local Government Area, Fatsuma Adamu; Chairman of Askira/Uba Local Government Area, Hon. Mada Saidu; alongside other senior government officials.
The Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) also accompanied the delegation throughout the visits as part of ongoing government efforts to engage affected communities and strengthen confidence in the response to the attacks.
