The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged to strengthen its partnership with the Federal Ministry of Interior to advance internal security, institutional reforms, and efficient service delivery across the 36 states of the federation.
The commitment was made by the Chairman of the Conference, , during a courtesy visit by a delegation of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to the Minister of Interior, , at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking after the meeting, Guwor described the engagement as a strategic step towards strengthening collaboration between the Federal Government and state legislatures, particularly in aligning federal internal policies with legislative actions at the state level.
He noted that State Houses of Assembly occupy a pivotal position in domesticating legislation, carrying out oversight responsibilities, and supporting policies that fall within the mandate of the Ministry of Interior.
According to him, discussions focused on creating stronger legislative support for federal initiatives at the grassroots to enhance governance and improve service delivery nationwide.
Guwor emphasized the need for greater synergy among all levels of government in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, stressing that sustained cooperation would promote peace, stability, and national development.
“Our shared goal is national development, peace, and improved welfare for Nigerians,” he stated, adding that the visit underscored the Conference’s commitment to building a robust legislative partnership with the Ministry on matters of internal security and governance.
Responding, Tunji-Ojo welcomed the initiative and commended the Conference of Speakers for its proactive engagement in promoting intergovernmental cooperation.
The Minister assured the delegation of the Ministry’s readiness to sustain dialogue with state legislatures through regular information sharing, collaborative oversight of federal facilities, and coordinated efforts aimed at improving public service delivery.
Both parties agreed to establish structured channels of collaboration to drive citizen-focused programmes and reinforce constitutional democracy through stronger federal-state cooperation.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of their collective commitment to deepening institutional partnerships in the interest of national development and the welfare of Nigerians.
