Labour Party chieftain and former Delta North Senatorial candidate, Rex Biose, has urged Nigerians not to lose confidence in democratic governance despite the nation’s persistent security, economic, and leadership challenges.
In a message commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Biose congratulated Nigerians, particularly residents of Delta North Senatorial District and Delta State, while calling for renewed dedication to the principles that underpin democracy and national development.
He described June 12 as a historic milestone that transcends ceremonial observance, noting that it symbolizes the sacrifices, courage, and determination of countless Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.
According to him, the annual celebration offers an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and honour the contributions of pro-democracy activists, political leaders, and ordinary Nigerians who stood for justice, freedom, and constitutional rule.
Biose paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, saying their commitment to ensuring that the voice of the people prevails remains an enduring legacy in the nation’s political history.
“The sacrifices made by those who championed democratic governance continue to inspire our collective pursuit of justice, liberty, and accountable leadership,” he said.
While acknowledging the gains recorded since the return to democratic rule, Biose noted that the country continues to face significant challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and governance deficits that have adversely affected the quality of life of many citizens.
He expressed concern over the growing incidence of kidnappings, banditry, and violent crimes across the country, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of government.
The Labour Party stalwart particularly condemned the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State, urging security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward securing their safe and immediate release.
Biose also called for stronger democratic institutions, greater accountability in public service, and leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people.
He emphasized that democracy must go beyond periodic elections and translate into improved security, economic opportunities, transparency, and effective service delivery for citizens.
“Democratic governance can only retain the confidence of the people when it delivers tangible results and addresses the challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians,” he stated.
The former senatorial candidate further urged Nigerians to remain actively involved in the democratic process by holding elected officials accountable and promoting the values of justice, equity, tolerance, and national cohesion.
According to him, nation-building requires the collective efforts of both leaders and citizens, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved through responsible leadership and active civic participation.
Biose also encouraged young Nigerians to remain optimistic about the country’s future and continue to engage constructively in governance and democratic activities.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome its present challenges and achieve lasting peace, prosperity, and good governance through patriotism, unity, and sustained citizen engagement.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to building a nation founded on justice, accountability, and equal opportunities for all. Together, we can strengthen our democracy and create a better future for generations to come,” he said.
He added that with collective determination, patriotism, and unwavering faith in democratic institutions, Nigeria’s democracy would continue to evolve and deliver greater dividends to its citizens.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in recognition of Nigeria’s democratic journey and in honour of individuals whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration and sustenance of civilian rule in the country.
