As Nigerians joined the rest of the country in commemorating Democracy Day, former Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has called on political leaders to recognise that public office is a trust reposed in them by the people and must be exercised with responsibility, integrity, and a commitment to service.
Okowa made the remark in a Democracy Day message shared on his social media platforms, where he reflected on the essence of democratic governance and the obligations of those entrusted with leadership.
According to the former governor, leadership should be guided by humility, accountability, and a sincere desire to improve the lives of citizens.
“On this Democracy Day, we are reminded that leadership is a trust bestowed by the people, one that must be exercised with humility, integrity, and a commitment to improving lives. Happy Democracy Day,” he stated.
The message, though concise, echoed the governance philosophy that characterised Okowa’s administration during his eight years as governor of Delta State, where he consistently advocated people-focused policies and inclusive development.
Political observers note that the themes highlighted in the Democracy Day message align with the ideals that shaped his administration, particularly his emphasis on delivering tangible benefits to citizens through strategic social and economic programmes.
During his tenure, Okowa championed the “Prosperity for All Deltans” agenda, which later evolved into the “Stronger Delta” vision, both of which were designed to expand opportunities and improve living standards across the state.
The former governor had repeatedly maintained that democracy must translate into measurable improvements in the lives of the people, arguing that democratic governance derives its legitimacy from its ability to deliver development, justice, and economic empowerment.
His latest remarks come amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and growing speculation over his potential return to the National Assembly as the representative of Delta North Senatorial District.
Okowa, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other political stakeholders in Delta State, remains one of the most influential political figures in the state.
Across Delta North, several political leaders and interest groups have continued to canvass support for the former governor, citing his experience in governance and previous service in the Senate.
Analysts believe his Democracy Day message reinforces his longstanding advocacy for accountability, inclusiveness, and democratic values, principles that may feature prominently in future political engagements.
As the nation reflects on the gains and challenges of democratic rule, Okowa urged leaders at all levels to remain faithful to the trust placed in them by the people and to pursue policies that promote human development, equity, and national progress.
