The Delta State Police Command has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 International Youth Day, with a call on young people to reject political and digital thuggery and embrace activities that contribute to peace, security and development.
The celebration, organised in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is being held under the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright, the three-day programme is designed to strengthen police-youth engagement and create opportunities for meaningful discussions on responsible citizenship, peaceful participation, digital responsibility and crime prevention.
The programme commenced on Thursday, August 20, with the official launch of the National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery at Coka Park, Asaba.
The second day, scheduled for Friday, August 21, will feature a youth sensitisation walkathon, commencing from the Delta State Police Headquarters along Okpanam Road, Asaba, at 7:00 a.m.
The activities will culminate on Saturday, August 22, with a Police-Youth Dialogue, panel discussion and special lecture at the Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters, Okpanam Road, Asaba, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Command said the programme would also feature lectures on issues affecting young people, including drug abuse and cultism, as well as the central campaign message, “My Future Is Greater Than Political & Digital Thuggery.”
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, urged youths to shun political violence, cultism, cybercrime, hate speech and other criminal activities capable of compromising their future.
Oyeniyi encouraged young people to channel their energy, creativity and talents into education, entrepreneurship, innovation, sports and other productive ventures that could improve their lives and contribute to the development of society.
He also called on youths and members of the public to participate actively in the activities and support efforts aimed at promoting constructive police-youth relations.
The Command said the initiative was part of the broader vision of the Inspector-General of Police to deepen engagement with young Nigerians and strengthen their role in building safer and more peaceful communities.
