A viral video showing the alleged public flogging, humiliation and banishment of a young man in Delta State has triggered widespread outrage, with calls mounting for security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
The victim, identified as Godspower Okedi, was allegedly assaulted in Emevor Community, Isoko North Local Government Area, after making Facebook posts critical of community leadership and raising concerns over an abandoned road project reportedly linked to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The disturbing footage, now widely circulated on social media, shows Okedi being repeatedly whipped with tree branches by youths, struck on the head, compelled to dance after the assault and later ordered to leave the community.
Also seen in the video are the Chairman of Emevor Community, Chief Lucky Okeremu, the Youth Chairman, Samuel Owhoka, and other community executives, who were present while the punishment was carried out. None of those captured in the footage appeared to intervene during the incident.
Accounts circulating on social media claim that Okedi’s ordeal followed a series of Facebook posts in which he criticised the state of abandoned NDDC road projects in Emevor and questioned the handling of development initiatives by some community leaders.
However, community sources offered a different account, alleging that the controversy was also fuelled by posts in which Okedi accused some leaders of financial impropriety over compensation allegedly paid to farmers whose crops were destroyed by herders.
According to the sources, Okedi urged residents not to accept the compensation, arguing that doing so could encourage further destruction of farmlands. One of the posts attributed to him read: “Take note when you start collecting money from these people, you have given them the power to do and commit more havoc… Say no to bandits. Let Emevor be safe.”
Community leaders reportedly interpreted the post as an allegation that they were receiving payments from herders in exchange for permitting unrestricted grazing within the community.
Following the incident, Okedi was reportedly banished from Emevor and directed to relocate to Ozoro, his father’s hometown. Reports further indicate that he was left to bear the cost of his medical treatment after sustaining injuries during the assault.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation from civil society groups, residents and social media users, many of whom described the alleged punishment as a violation of fundamental human rights.
Reacting to the development, the President-General of Emevor Kingdom, High Chief Emmanuel Erezih (Okpomo), dissociated the kingdom from the actions captured in the video and condemned the treatment meted out to the victim.
“It is with deep sadness and concern that I address the videos currently circulating online. No online post, regardless of its content, justifies the kind of treatment witnessed in those videos. Such actions are unacceptable and have no place in our community,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Delta State Police Command on the incident, while it remained unclear whether any arrests had been made.
The video has continued to generate intense public debate, with many Nigerians urging law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable in accordance with the law.
