ASABA — Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Christian leaders across the state to extend the goodwill and support they have shown his administration to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Oborevwori made the appeal on Wednesday when the Executive Committee of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Delta State, led by its Chairman, Bishop Abos Willie, paid him a special prayer visit at the Government House in Asaba.
The governor, who said his membership of the APC placed a responsibility on him to work for the success of the party, urged religious leaders to mobilise prayers and support for President Tinubu and APC candidates.
“I am an APC man. I must work for my President and I must work for my candidates. I will continue to speak for them,” Oborevwori said.
He appealed to Christian leaders to extend to Tinubu the same goodwill they had demonstrated towards his administration.
“If you love me and you believe I am doing well as Governor, extend that love to Mr President and to all my candidates. That is the truth,” he said.
Oborevwori attributed his victory in the 2023 governorship election to the grace of God and the prayers of Christian leaders, urging them to sustain their intercession for the country, the President and the state.
He said the outcome of the 2027 elections should not be determined solely by political calculations, stressing that God remained the ultimate arbiter in matters of leadership.
The governor specifically requested prayers for wisdom, strength, good health and divine guidance for President Tinubu as his administration implements ongoing reforms.
According to him, some of the reforms have improved the financial capacity of governments at the state and local government levels.
He cited the increased ability of local councils to execute development projects, including road construction and healthcare infrastructure, as indications of the impact of the reforms.
“Before now, to pay salaries was a problem. To construct roads was a problem. Councils could not even execute projects. But now, local governments can do projects because the reforms are working,” he said.
The governor said his administration had remained focused on translating available resources into tangible development through the execution of infrastructure and other projects across Delta State.
Oborevwori Seeks Prayers for Peace
Oborevwori also urged Christian leaders to remain actively involved in the political process, noting that decisions made through politics affect virtually every aspect of society.
He said churches should not completely withdraw from political affairs, but should encourage responsible participation that promotes peace, development and good governance.
The governor further called for sustained prayers for peace and stability in Delta State, particularly to preserve the prevailing security situation.
“Pray for Mr President, pray for the state. Pray for good governance. Pray for peace and unity. I know God will continue to lead us,” he said.
He thanked the PFN leadership and other Christian leaders for their prayers and support, assuring them that his administration would remain committed to good governance, development and the welfare of residents.
PFN Pledges Continued Support
Earlier, the PFN delegation offered prayers for the governor, his administration, Delta State and Nigeria, seeking divine wisdom, protection, peace and progress.
The PFN Delta Chairman, Bishop Abos Willie, commended Oborevwori for what he described as notable achievements in infrastructure, peace and development, as well as his growing national profile.
Willie assured the governor that the Christian body would intensify prayers for his administration and the 2027 electoral process.
He said prayer centres would be established across the state to seek divine intervention for peaceful campaigns and a violence-free election.
The PFN chairman also commended Oborevwori for his handling of potentially volatile situations, saying the fellowship was encouraged by the prevailing peace in the state and the administration’s achievements under the MORE Agenda.
According to him, the PFN has strengthened its grassroots structures across Delta, with about 4,150 ward officers and coordinators expected to be deployed across the state.
He disclosed that the fellowship had also established a College of Theology with more than 300 students and was nearing completion of a hatchery project as part of its contribution to economic empowerment.
Willie pledged continued prayers for divine favour, wisdom and strength for the governor, as well as greater recognition and development for Delta State at the national and international levels.
He also commended the governor for convening the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing the initiative as a significant step towards attracting investment and strengthening the state’s economy.
