A new civic and youth leadership initiative, CIVITAS Nigeria, has been formally unveiled in Delta State, setting out an ambitious agenda to nurture patriotism, responsible citizenship, and a pipeline of ethical, future-ready leaders across the country.
The launch, facilitated by Leadership Impact for Transformation (LIFT) Nigeria, was held in Agbor and drew a large and diverse audience, including students from 19 public and private secondary schools, educators, parents, community figures, faith leaders, and key stakeholders in the education sector.
Anchored on the theme, “Igniting a New Generation of Civic Leadership in Nigeria,” the programme underscored the urgency of equipping young Nigerians with the values, discipline, and leadership capacity needed to actively shape their communities and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The unveiling comes amid growing national discourse on youth empowerment, ethical leadership, and civic responsibility, highlighting the importance of preparing younger generations for constructive engagement in society.
According to the organisers, CIVITAS is structured around three foundational pillars, Identity, Agency, and Stewardship, which collectively provide a framework for youth development.
While Identity emphasises self-awareness, purpose, and civic responsibility, Agency focuses on building confidence and the capacity to drive positive change.
Stewardship, on the other hand, promotes service, accountability, and ethical leadership.
The initiative is designed to move students beyond theoretical learning into active civic participation, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Speaking at the event, the Founding Visionary and Convener of CIVITAS Nigeria, Dr. Ebere Morgan, described the initiative as a deliberate response to the need for structured leadership development among Nigerian youths.
He noted that with Nigeria’s large youth population, the country’s future depends significantly on how effectively young people are prepared for leadership roles.
“CIVITAS represents more than a programme; it is a movement aimed at awakening purpose, patriotism, and responsibility among young Nigerians.
Our goal is to equip them with the competence, character, and courage required to drive meaningful change,” he stated.
Dr. Morgan stressed that sustainable national development is closely tied to early investment in leadership values, civic education, and identity formation, adding that tackling societal challenges such as indiscipline, corruption, and civic apathy must begin with intentional value reorientation.
He further emphasised that leadership should extend beyond political positions to include everyday actions that influence positive outcomes and improve lives.
Delivering the keynote address titled “The Way Forward for Nigeria,” guest speaker, Rev. Fr. Alex Okondugba, urged participants to embrace active citizenship and reject complacency.
He maintained that true leadership is grounded in integrity, competence, and service rather than titles, adding that national progress depends on individuals of strong character.
“Leadership is not merely about authority; it is about responsibility. Nations thrive when people of integrity are entrusted with leadership,” he said.
Earlier, the National Director of Partnerships and Development for CIVITAS, Mr. Anthony Monye, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, encouraging students to begin cultivating leadership qualities early in life.
“Leadership starts now, through discipline, responsibility, and the choices made daily,” he noted, while also calling on parents, teachers, and community leaders to play active roles in shaping the next generation.
The successful rollout marks a significant milestone in LIFT Nigeria’s broader mission to strengthen civic culture, promote patriotism, and advance youth development nationwide.
Participants and observers alike commended the initiative, noting the high level of engagement and enthusiasm among students as evidence of a growing demand for platforms that combine inspiration with practical leadership development.
Organisers revealed plans to expand the programme across other regions, with upcoming activities expected to include mentorship schemes, leadership workshops, community service initiatives, and the establishment of CIVITAS chapters in schools nationwide.
The event also featured goodwill messages from public officials and community leaders, while participating students took the CIVITAS Pledge and received certificates, committing to uphold and promote the initiative’s core values.
With its successful debut in Delta State, CIVITAS is positioning itself as a significant force in shaping Nigeria’s emerging generation of civic-minded leaders, with expectations of wider national impact in the near future.
