A Federal High Court sitting in Warri has ordered the unconditional release of Professor Arthur Ekpekpo and other detained leaders of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa issued the order on Wednesday while ruling on a motion filed under the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules by the applicants, who have been in detention since their arrest by military authorities in August 2024.

The court also fixed July 13, 2026, for the continuation of hearing on the substantive suit.

The ruling triggered jubilation in Okuama community as residents celebrated what they described as a triumph of justice.

The detained leaders were arrested following the killing of 17 military personnel who were reportedly on a peace mission to the community.

Among those detained was the late President-General of Okuama, Pa James Oghoroko, who died while in custody.

The case, marked FHC/WR/CS/42/2024, is between Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and others against the Federal Government of Nigeria and others.
