The Pointer At 32: Celebrating A Legacy Of Truth, Service, Responsible Journalism

By Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza

In a society where the truth is constantly challenged, public trust is increasingly fragile, and the media landscape is changing at breathtaking speed, the survival of a newspaper for 32 years is more than an anniversary worth celebrating.

It is a testament to resilience, institutional relevance, and enduring public service. For The Pointer Newspaper, 32 years represent not just the passage of time, but over three decades of telling the Delta story, documenting our collective journey and giving expression to the aspirations of our people.

As The Pointer Newspaper, the flagship publication of the Delta State Government, marks this significant milestone, I warmly congratulate its management, editorial team, staff, and all those whose dedication and sacrifices have sustained the newspaper through the years.

Having served as Commissioner for Information in Delta State, I appreciate firsthand the strategic importance of The Pointer in communicating government policies, amplifying the voices of our people, and providing a platform for constructive public discourse.

For me, this anniversary is not merely a celebration of longevity. It is an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and recommitment to the fundamental principles of journalism: truth, fairness, accuracy, objectivity, and accountability.

In an era when social media often sacrifices facts on the altar of speed and sensationalism, The Pointer must continue to distinguish itself through credible reporting, editorial professionalism, and responsible journalism.

As a government-owned newspaper, its greatest strength should lie not merely in reporting the activities of government, but in earning and sustaining public trust through balanced reportage and constructive engagement with society.

I also believe that the future of The Pointer lies in embracing digital innovation, investing in the professional development of its workforce and building a sustainable media institution capable of competing favourably in today’s rapidly evolving information landscape.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, my charge to The Pointer is simple: let the next chapter be greater than the last.

Let its pages continue to speak truth, defend public interest, celebrate our achievements, and hold up a mirror to our society with courage and fairness. The newspaper must remain not just a chronicler of Delta State’s history, but an active contributor to its progress.

To everyone who has played a part in this 32-year journey, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and appreciation. Institutions endure not simply because they have existed for many years, but because they continue to matter to the people they serve.

At 32, The Pointer has earned its place in our history. Its greater responsibility now is to secure its relevance in our future. May its voice remain strong, its credibility unquestionable, and its commitment to the people of Delta State unwavering.

Happy 32nd Anniversary to The Pointer Newspaper!

Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza was the former Commissioner for Information in Delta State and currently serves as the Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties (Government House), Delta State.
