Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved an immediate emergency intervention on the deteriorating Mosogar-Oghara stretch of the Warri-Benin Highway in a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing the hardship faced by thousands of motorists using the busy federal road.
The directive comes amid growing public outcry over the deplorable condition of the highway, which has caused prolonged gridlock, increased travel time and heightened safety risks for commuters and commercial transport operators.
Announcing the governor’s decision on Wednesday, the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the intervention underscores the administration’s commitment to providing practical solutions to infrastructure challenges affecting residents and road users.
Izeze explained that although the Warri-Benin Highway falls under the responsibility of the Federal Government, Governor Oborevwori considered it necessary to step in because of the severe hardship the failed section has imposed on commuters and the strategic economic importance of the route.
He disclosed that the governor had directed immediate palliative works on the affected stretch to restore smoother traffic movement and enhance the safety of road users pending a comprehensive reconstruction of the highway by the Federal Government.
According to the commissioner, Obakpor Engineering Construction Company has already mobilised to the site with construction materials, including stones and sand, marking the commencement of the emergency rehabilitation exercise.
He expressed optimism that the intervention would substantially improve vehicular movement and provide much-needed relief for motorists travelling through the corridor.
Izeze added that the action reflects the collaborative relationship between the Delta State Government and the Federal Government in addressing infrastructure needs, noting that it aligns with the development priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.
He said the intervention further demonstrates the shared commitment of both administrations to improving the welfare of Nigerians through responsive governance and strategic infrastructure development.
The Warri-Benin Highway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, serving as a critical link between the South-South region and other parts of the country. The road is extensively used by commuters, commercial transport operators and heavy-duty vehicles conveying petroleum products, agricultural produce and other essential goods.
The Mosogar-Oghara section has, however, suffered extensive deterioration in recent months, leading to persistent traffic bottlenecks, frequent vehicle breakdowns and rising transportation costs.
The state government’s emergency repairs are expected to offer immediate respite to road users while longer-term reconstruction plans by the Federal Government are awaited.
