Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s determination to extend critical infrastructure and economic opportunities to riverine communities as part of efforts to stimulate grassroots development and improve livelihoods.
Governor Oborevwori stated this on Monday during the commissioning of a modern market in Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area of the state.
The Governor, who was represented by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, said the project was conceived to strengthen commercial activities, support small businesses and create a more conducive environment for economic growth in the community and its environs.
He said the facility was designed to address the trading needs of Oporoza and neighbouring communities, while also providing an organised and improved environment for traders.
The market comprises 24 lock-up shops, 24 open shops, modern male and female conveniences, a solar-powered water system and landscaping designed to enhance cleanliness, safety and functionality.
Oborevwori said the project reflected his administration’s commitment to ensuring that riverine communities were integrated into the state’s development process.

He added that the facility was expected to support small businesses, create employment opportunities, stimulate economic activities and contribute to the state’s internally generated revenue.
The Governor further assured the community that its request for an expansion of the facility would receive government consideration after the market had been put to effective use.
He urged traders and community leaders to take ownership of the project, maintain the facility and ensure that it continued to serve its intended purpose.
According to him, the intervention aligns with the administration’s MORE Agenda, particularly its focus on creating opportunities and promoting inclusive development across Delta State.
Project Will Boost Local Economy — Commissioner
The Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. Samuel Oligida, described the commissioning as an important milestone in the economic development of Oporoza and surrounding communities.
Oligida said the market would provide a stronger platform for local enterprises to flourish while encouraging commercial activities and improving the economic prospects of residents.
“This project is about empowering our people and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. It is also a reflection of the MORE Agenda of this administration, which places the needs and welfare of the people at the centre of governance,” he said.
The Commissioner commended the contractor for completing the project within the stipulated period and urged beneficiaries to protect and maintain the facility.
Clark Hails Riverine Intervention
The Commissioner for Riverine Infrastructure, Chief Ebikeme Clark, commended Governor Oborevwori for prioritising development projects in riverine communities.
Clark described the market as evidence of the administration’s commitment to equitable distribution of infrastructure and development opportunities across the state.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Warri South West Local Government Area, Hon. Sylvester Oromoni, represented by Mr. Christopher Tonwe, described the project as a significant intervention capable of expanding economic activities in Oporoza.
The Chairman of Oporoza Community, Comrade Emmanuel Ebi, expressed appreciation to the Governor, describing the project as a landmark achievement for the community.
The ceremony attracted members of the Delta State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, community leaders, traders and residents.
The event culminated in the formal commissioning and handing over of the facility to the community leadership for the allocation of shops to traders by Governor Oborevwori’s representative and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor.
