Suspended Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has continued to demonstrate concern for the welfare of fellow inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Warri, despite his ongoing detention at the facility.
Izeze was on Monday arraigned before a Delta State High Court sitting in Effurun over an alleged assault involving Simon Umudi, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Protocol.
Following the proceedings, the court ordered that Izeze and his associate, Simeon Aguariavwodo, be remanded at the Warri custodial facility pending further proceedings.
However, sources at the correctional centre said the development had not dampened Izeze’s spirit, as he had continued to engage in initiatives aimed at supporting inmates and improving their welfare.
According to the sources, the suspended commissioner has been planning a football tournament, tagged “Ukodo na Tevwe,” for inmates at the facility, despite his reported health concerns and the legal proceedings against him.
Izeze has also reportedly intervened in the cases of some inmates who were unable to meet financial obligations attached to their release, paying the required fines to facilitate their freedom and reduce the burden on their families.
The sources further disclosed that Izeze was collaborating with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on a proposed water project for the custodial centre.
The initiative, if implemented, is expected to improve access to potable water and address some of the basic welfare challenges confronting inmates at the facility.
His activities have reportedly drawn attention among inmates and staff, with sources describing him as maintaining a calm and positive disposition while extending support to others despite his own circumstances.
The development has also highlighted Izeze’s continued engagement with issues of welfare and community support, even as he faces ongoing legal proceedings.
