Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to pursue issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against violence, bitterness and political division.
Guwor made the call on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while delivering his opening address as the House resumed plenary after its annual recess.
He said the political class had a responsibility to ensure that the 2027 electoral season strengthened democracy rather than deepen divisions among the people.
“Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair,” the Speaker said.
According to him, campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on August 19, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.
Guwor consequently appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and the general public to embrace peace and responsible political engagement throughout the electoral process.
Assembly Celebrates Delta at 35
The Speaker also congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state.
He said the House joined Deltans at home and abroad in celebrating the milestone, while expressing gratitude to God for His protection and guidance over members and their families during the legislative recess.
Guwor described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Delta State’s journey and the collective responsibility of citizens and leaders to build a stronger state.
Guwor Commends Economic Investment Summit
The Speaker further commended the state government for organising the Delta S2027tate Economic and Investment Summit during the Assembly’s recess.
He described the summit as a strategic platform for showcasing investment opportunities across the state and connecting Delta with domestic and international investors.
Guwor said the House would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing to promote an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and economic development.
He commended Governor Oborevwori and his administration for what he described as the strategic initiative.
Nine New Constituencies
The Speaker also described the increase in the number of State Constituencies from 29 to 38 ahead of the 2027 elections as a historic development.
According to him, the creation of nine additional constituencies would strengthen democratic representation by giving more communities a direct voice in the legislative process.
“Representation is at the heart of democracy,” Guwor said, noting that the development offered an opportunity for more communities to participate directly in governance and the democratic process.
Speaker Tasks Lawmakers On Legislative Agenda
With plenary now resumed, Guwor urged lawmakers to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed commitment and urgency.
He specifically charged committee chairmen and members to ensure that pending Bills, Motions and Petitions receive prompt attention.
The Speaker also encouraged members to translate the knowledge and insights gained from their leadership training at the London Business School into practical improvements in their legislative responsibilities.
He assured that the Assembly would remain focused on delivering effective legislation and strengthening its contribution to the development of Delta State.
Guwor concluded by welcoming lawmakers back to the Chamber and urging them to “hit the ground running” as the House begins another phase of legislative business.
