ASABA — Ahead of the October 15, 2026, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council elections, the STAND-UP Campaign Team has formally declared its intention to contest, unveiling an agenda focused on unity, members’ welfare, professional development and institutional growth.
The team, led by a public relations practitioner cum a team player Comrade Kenneth Onojomena Obieh, as its chairmanship candidate, made the declaration in Asaba, on Thursday September 24, 2026, where it outlined its vision for a more united, accountable and professionally driven Council.
Other members of the team are Comrade (Dcn) Patrick Ochie, aka Gentle Lion, Vice Chairman; Comrade Felix Ekwu, Secretary; Comrade Mrs. Josephine Omodior, Assistant Secretary; Comrade Caroline Ubini, Treasurer; and Comrade Michael Ilaya, Auditor.
Ubini and Ilaya are contesting their respective positions unopposed.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Obieh said Delta NUJ was at a defining moment that required purposeful leadership, a clear roadmap and structured strategies for economic and infrastructural development.
He said the team’s proposed administration would seek to restore unity of purpose among members of the State Working Committee (SWC), State Executive Council (SEC) and the various chapels across the state.
“For us, this is not about a title. It is about sacrifice for a union we all cherish. If you don’t stand up for something, we will fall for anything.
“Never will Delta NUJ sit or stand aloof. We will STAND-UP for what is right and just, and practice it,” the team declared.
The campaign team said its vision was anchored on a proactive, productive and deliberate leadership philosophy, backed by a comprehensive blueprint designed to address the needs of journalists and strengthen the Council’s institutional capacity.
According to the team, its agenda would focus on improving members’ welfare, promoting professional development, strengthening accountability and transparency, fostering unity and ensuring that journalists have a stronger voice in the affairs of their union.
It also pledged to pursue an inclusive, service-oriented administration that would place members’ interests at the centre of its programmes while encouraging professionalism and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.
The team further identified capacity building, welfare, institutional development and initiatives to improve the professional and socio-economic well-being of journalists as key priorities of its proposed administration.
Describing its members as a blend of experience across Council and chapel levels, the team said it was committed to building a stronger and more effective union.
It also expressed confidence that the emergence of its treasurer and auditor unopposed reflected support for its vision, adding that the development marked what it described as the beginning of a better future for practising journalists in Delta State.
The STAND-UP Team assured NUJ members of an inclusive administration that would listen to their concerns, serve their interests and work towards delivering on its promises if elected.
It said its ultimate goal was to build a more united, accountable and professionally driven Delta State Council of the NUJ.
