The Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Patrick Ochei, has condemned the growing atmosphere of political tension and violence in the country, warning that no politician or political party is worth the life of any Nigerian.

Ochei, in a strongly worded appeal titled “Stop The Political Nonsense Now!”, called on political leaders, party loyalists and their supporters to desist from actions capable of triggering violence and needless bloodshed as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

He lamented that the fundamental ideals of party politics and democratic participation had been undermined by corruption, selfish interests and manipulative tendencies, leaving ordinary citizens exposed to the consequences of political desperation.

According to him, Nigeria is currently at a critical democratic crossroads, requiring responsible leadership and a renewed commitment to the principles of freedom, tolerance and peaceful political engagement.

He stressed that political leaders must create an atmosphere in which citizens can freely exercise their constitutional rights to campaign, vote and participate in the process of electing their preferred candidates without intimidation or fear.

The NUJ Vice Chairman cautioned that sacrificing human lives in defence of politicians or political parties was an avoidable tragedy, insisting that political loyalty should never supersede the sanctity of human life.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic history, Ochei paid tribute to those who made enormous sacrifices in the struggle for democratic governance, particularly the late journalist, Dele Giwa, and the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola.

He noted that the sacrifices of the nation’s democratic heroes must not be trivialised by individuals who, having benefited from the freedom secured through their struggles, now encourage or participate in political violence.

Ochei maintained that the country had moved beyond the era when political disagreements should result in intimidation, destruction of property or loss of lives, urging political actors to demonstrate maturity and respect for democratic values.

He particularly called for peace in Asaba, Delta State, and across the country, warning against the escalation of political hostilities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, Nigeria needs constructive political competition, peaceful campaigns, credible elections and leaders whose conduct reflects competence, integrity and genuine commitment to public service.

He further emphasised that democracy should provide a platform for the peaceful expression of divergent political opinions rather than become an instrument of violence, coercion and intimidation.

The NUJ chieftain urged political parties and their supporters to embrace dialogue, mutual respect and tolerance, stressing that disagreements should be settled through democratic engagement and the ballot box.

Reiterating his position, Ochei declared that no political ambition, electoral contest or party interest could justify the destruction of human lives.

He therefore appealed to Nigerians, particularly political stakeholders and their followers, to reject political desperation, uphold the sanctity of human life and collectively safeguard the peace and stability of the country.

Let us choose peace over violence and democracy over political desperation,”,he urged.
