The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly taking a toxic substance.
The Command said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after the suspect allegedly invited her with a promise to train her in content creation, a programme he reportedly advertised on his social media platforms.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly took the woman to a hotel upon her arrival in Asaba, where he was accused of raping and physically assaulting her.
The Command said the woman later returned home traumatised and narrated the alleged incident to her parents.
Police further disclosed that before her death, the deceased recorded a video in which she recounted the alleged assault and the emotional trauma she claimed to have suffered.
The Command said she subsequently ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and later died despite efforts to save her life.
Following receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Commander, Effurun, to launch an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
The police said operatives swiftly commenced investigations, leading to the arrest of Ogbonna.
According to the Command, the suspect has made what it described as useful statements during preliminary interrogation, while investigators continue efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Assuring the deceased’s family and members of the public of a thorough investigation, Commissioner Oyeniyi said no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to conducting a professional, impartial and diligent investigation, adding that anyone found culpable would face appropriate legal action in accordance with the law.
The statement announcing the arrest was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, on Wednesday.
