As the Nigerian Army marks its 162nd anniversary, it reflects on a proud legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to national unity and global peacekeeping.

Under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Army has intensified its transformation agenda, focusing on enhanced operational capabilities and the welfare of its personnel.

In a goodwill message commemorating the anniversary, the National President of the Northern Consensus Movement, Dr. Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, lauded the Army’s enduring contributions to national security and praised the strategic direction provided by COAS Oluyede.

“Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Oluyede, the Nigerian Army has remained steadfast in countering terrorism and tackling emerging threats across the country. His vision has significantly strengthened the Army’s operational effectiveness,” Dr. Awwal stated.

Tracing its origins to 1863, with the formation of the “Glover Hausas” by Lieutenant Glover of the Royal Navy, the Nigerian Army has evolved into a formidable institution, playing key roles in international peacekeeping missions, global conflicts, and internal security operations.

Dr. Awwal further noted that the current leadership has prioritized not just battlefield readiness but also the welfare of soldiers and civil-military cooperation.

“Lieutenant General Oluyede’s leadership has ushered in reforms that emphasize modernisation, troop morale, and community engagement. His efforts have ensured that the Army remains a symbol of national resilience,” he added.

Despite the multifaceted security challenges facing the country, the Nigerian Army has consistently demonstrated its capacity to protect the sovereignty and socio-cultural fabric of the nation.

Its efforts under COAS Oluyede have disrupted terrorist activities, curtailed banditry, and bolstered public confidence in the military.

As part of the week-long celebrations for its 162nd anniversary, the Army has rolled out a series of civil-military projects and commemorative events, including:

Commissioning of community-based infrastructure,

Medical outreach programs offering free healthcare services,

Charity initiatives for vulnerable groups,

And a golf tournament promoting unity among security stakeholders.

These activities reflect the Army’s growing commitment to nation-building and community development, reinforcing the principle that security is a shared responsibility between the military and civilians.

Dr. Awwal commended these initiatives, emphasizing that they exemplify the Army’s responsiveness to both security imperatives and humanitarian needs.

“This milestone is not only a celebration of military achievement but also a reaffirmation of the Army’s duty to protect and serve the people. COAS Oluyede has shown exemplary leadership, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to him and the entire Nigerian Army,” he said.

As the Army looks ahead, it remains focused on continuous improvement, strategic modernization, and greater synergy with other security agencies to address evolving threats.

The 162nd anniversary is more than a ceremonial marker, it is a call to deepen the Army’s foundational values of discipline, patriotism, and professionalism.

“With Lieutenant General Oluyede at the helm, the Nigerian Army is well-positioned to meet the demands of modern warfare and maintain its pivotal role in safeguarding the nation,” Dr. Awwal concluded.
