As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the YandyTech Community has urged political leaders and public office holders across the country to embrace visionary leadership, strengthen democratic institutions, and prioritize the collective interests of the nation over personal and sectional agendas.
The call was contained in a Democracy Day statement signed by the Communications and Partnership Associate of the YandyTech Community, Nchiye Joy Dogara, and made available to journalists in Kaduna.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the organization described the occasion as an opportunity not only to celebrate democratic milestones but also to assess the nation’s progress and confront lingering challenges.
According to the group, Nigeria has recorded significant gains over the past 27 years, including the consolidation of democratic transitions, increased citizen participation in governance, advancements in technology and innovation, and the rise of a dynamic youth population contributing to national development.
The statement noted that these achievements were made possible through the resilience of Nigerians and the sustained operation of democratic institutions, which have helped preserve constitutional governance despite numerous challenges.
While acknowledging the progress made, the community expressed concern over persistent socio-economic and security challenges confronting the country.
It observed that many Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity, and declining trust in public institutions.
The group further emphasized that issues relating to accountability, justice, effective governance, and adherence to the rule of law remain critical to the country’s democratic development and require urgent attention.
It stressed that the true measure of democracy extends beyond the conduct of elections, arguing that democratic governance must translate into improved security, economic opportunities, social justice, and better living conditions for citizens.
The YandyTech Community therefore called for transparent governance, stronger institutions, and people-oriented policies capable of addressing the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.
Highlighting the importance of youth inclusion in nation-building, the organization described Nigeria’s youthful population as a strategic asset that must be empowered through quality education, innovation, entrepreneurship, skills development, and expanded economic opportunities.
The statement also paid tribute to pro-democracy advocates and citizens whose sacrifices contributed to the sustenance of democratic governance in Nigeria.
It urged Nigerians to remain committed to the principles of national unity, accountability, civic responsibility, and democratic participation.
Reaffirming its optimism about the country’s future, the group maintained that Nigeria’s progress depends on the collective resolve of leaders, institutions, and citizens to build a nation where democratic governance delivers meaningful benefits and sustainable development for all.
“The future of Nigeria rests on our shared commitment to building a society where democracy is not merely a system of government but a vehicle for justice, opportunity, prosperity, and national advancement for every citizen,” the statement added.
