Tension has risen in Ilesa, Osun State, following a gun attack on supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday morning, leaving two people dead and two others critically injured.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at Igbogi, where APC supporters had gathered ahead of the party’s final campaign rally scheduled for 8 a.m.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants stormed the gathering and opened fire on the supporters before fleeing the scene.
A resident, identified as Sola, said the victims were among party supporters preparing to move to the venue of the final campaign rally when the attack occurred.
He said the supporters had been directed by party leaders to converge at Igbogi before proceeding to the rally venue.
The incident has heightened concerns over the growing political tension in the area, coming only days after another confrontation reportedly involving operatives of the state security outfit, Amotekun.
However, the APC Campaign Council has confirmed that four of its supporters were affected in Tuesday’s attack.
The council’s Media Head, Oluremi Omowaiye, said two of the victims died, while two others sustained serious injuries and were receiving medical treatment.
“Four of our supporters were shot, two of them are dead while two others are in critical condition,” Omowaiye said.
He further disclosed that the APC woman leader in Ilesa was among those injured in the attack and had been taken to Wesley Guild Hospital for treatment.
Security authorities are expected to investigate the attack and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as tension remains high in the community.
