Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing protracted internal crises and leadership disputes within the party.
The resignation was announced in a statement issued on Friday, January 23, by the governor’s media aide, Sunusi Tofa.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the NNPP chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, with immediate effect.
In the letter, the governor expressed gratitude to the party but said persistent internal conflicts had made his continued membership untenable.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the letter stated.
Governor Yusuf noted that the party has recently been engulfed by leadership disagreements and multiple legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts, creating uncertainty at both state and national levels.
He lamented what he described as growing disenfranchisement among party members, warning that the situation had resulted in deep divisions and cracks within the party structure that appear increasingly irreconcilable.
Despite his decision, the governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership and members for providing him the platform and support to serve the people of Kano State, and for the goodwill extended to him since joining the party in 2022.
Meanwhile, the statement disclosed that Governor Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP will be accompanied by a significant political realignment, as 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state are set to leave the party alongside him.
The development marks a major shake-up in Kano State’s political landscape and signals a potentially wider realignment ahead of future elections.
