Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated a team of exceptional students from Delta State who represented Nigeria and emerged champions at the prestigious World Schools Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar.
The all-Delta Nigerian team triumphed over formidable opponents from the State of Chicago, USA, and host nation Qatar, delivering a resounding performance that secured their place at the top of the global stage.
The team recorded a 2–1 win in the first round and a flawless 3–0 victory in the final, closing the tournament with an aggregate score of 5–1.
The victorious debaters include:
Wisdom Chukwuma – Government College, Ughelli
Otorvo Uyoyou – Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun
Abraham Honour – Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka
Ikhamateh Splendour – Government Model Secondary School, Asaba
Alika Daniel – Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori lauded the students’ brilliant performance, describing it as a significant affirmation of Delta State’s rising profile as a beacon of academic and intellectual excellence.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our brilliant students for making Delta and Nigeria proud on the global stage,” the governor stated.
He gave special recognition to Miss Ikhamateh Splendour, who was named Overall Best Debater of the championship, calling her achievement “a historic and inspiring testament to the resilience, confidence, and excellence embedded in the Delta Can-Do Spirit.”
Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the team’s victory reflects the impact of strategic investments in education under his MORE Agenda, noting that such achievements further reinforce the administration’s commitment to human capital development.
He encouraged other Nigerian youths to emulate the team’s focus, discipline, and excellence, urging them to stay dedicated to their academic goals and personal growth.
The team’s performance has continued to generate widespread acclaim, with spontaneous celebrations erupting across Delta State and beyond, as citizens hail the students for bringing international honour to their homeland.
