The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Delta State Council, has honoured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori with the title “Ukodo the Pace Setter” in recognition of his administration’s move to institutionalise the payment of a 13th-month salary to public servants in the state.
The labour union described the initiative as a commendable step towards strengthening workers’ welfare, particularly at a time when rising living costs and prevailing economic difficulties continue to place significant financial pressure on employees and their households.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, the TUC said providing legal backing for the additional salary reflected the state government’s appreciation of the contributions of workers to Delta State’s growth and development.
According to the congress, the honorary title recognises Oborevwori’s commitment to policies that deliver practical benefits to the workforce and demonstrate a willingness to address the welfare concerns of public servants.
The union maintained that improved welfare and a sense of recognition could enhance workers’ morale, productivity and dedication to their responsibilities, ultimately contributing to more effective public service delivery.
While commending the governor for the initiative, the TUC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the state government on policies aimed at promoting good governance, sustainable development and improved living standards for workers and residents.
However, the congress emphasised that its relationship with the government would remain anchored on constructive engagement, mutual respect and sustained dialogue.
It noted that organised labour would continue to support policies that advance workers’ interests while engaging the authorities on unresolved issues affecting the workforce.
The union also called on the Oborevwori administration to sustain consultations with labour organisations and introduce further measures to improve workers’ purchasing power, promote productivity and safeguard their dignity.
Addressing public servants across Delta State, the TUC said the institutionalisation of the 13th-month salary demonstrated the value of continuous dialogue between government and organised labour in achieving outcomes that benefit workers.
It urged employees to respond positively to the government’s gesture by demonstrating professionalism, discipline and renewed commitment to their duties.
Expressing appreciation to the governor on behalf of its leadership and members, the congress described the policy as a significant contribution to the welfare of the Delta workforce.
“Your Excellency, you have taken a bold step in workers’ welfare. You have set a pace. Ukodo the Pace Setter,” the statement declared.
The TUC’s recognition places workers’ welfare and sustained cooperation between the state government and organised labour at the centre of its commendation of the Oborevwori administration.
