Delta Speaker Hails Delta Students’ Global Debate Victory

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has commended the outstanding performance of Delta State students who represented Nigeria at the World Schools Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar, describing their victory as a moment of pride and honour for both the state and the nation.

Reacting to the news of Nigeria’s emergence as the overall champion, defeating teams from the State of Chicago, USA, and host country, Qatar—Rt. Hon. Guwor said the accomplishment underscores the academic excellence and global competitiveness of students from Delta State.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker praised the students for their brilliance, discipline, and determination, which he said are key traits of champions.

“The students have demonstrated that with adequate preparation, focus, and vision, young Nigerians can compete and triumph on the global stage,” Guwor stated.

He noted that the achievement is not only a testament to the intellectual capacity and oratorical skill of the team but also reflects the strength of the educational system and the culture of excellence nurtured in Delta State.

On behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, the Speaker congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all Nigerians on the remarkable global success of the students.

He expressed the Assembly’s eagerness to welcome the victorious team back to Delta State as worthy ambassadors of excellence and shining examples to millions of young Nigerians.

Rt. Hon. Guwor also reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that promote youth development, educational advancement, and excellence in all spheres.

The victorious team comprised:

Wisdom Chukwuma, Government College, Ughelli (Ughelli North LGA)

Otorvo Uyoyou, Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun (Uvwie LGA)

Abraham Ihonor, Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka (Udu LGA)

Ekhamateh Splendour, Government Model Secondary School, Asaba (Oshimili South LGA)

Alika Daniel, Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale (Ndokwa West LGA)

The students, all from Delta State, were led to Doha by the Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere.

The team defeated host country Qatar 2-1 in the first round, and went on to claim a 3-0 victory in the final round, winning the championship with a cumulative score of 5-1.
