…NLC condemns alleged assault, suspends work pending further directives
ASABA — Activities at the Delta State Civil Service Secretariat in Asaba were disrupted as civil servants staged a protest over the alleged assault and death of a Director, reportedly involving the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, and his aides.
The protest triggered tension across the Secretariat, forcing workers to withdraw their services in a demonstration of outrage over the circumstances surrounding the official’s death.
The incident has sparked demands for accountability, with organised labour insisting that the matter must be thoroughly investigated and anyone found culpable brought to justice.
NLC Declares Work Suspension
Addressing journalists during the protest, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, condemned the alleged assault and called for a comprehensive investigation.
Ofobruku said those found responsible for the incident would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of all affiliate unions to deliberate on the situation.
The labour leader stated that work across the civil service would remain suspended pending further directives, signalling a potential disruption of government activities as workers await the outcome of the matter.
Aniagwu Assures Workers of Justice
Reacting to the protest, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, assured workers that the state government would ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
Aniagwu said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was committed to ensuring that justice was served, assuring that no stone would be left unturned in establishing the facts surrounding the Director’s death.
However, the government’s assurance comes amid growing demands from workers for transparency and accountability over the alleged assault.
Police Move to Restore Order
The Area Commander, Asaba, ACP Alex Udeze, who was present at the scene, said the police were invited following the unrest and responded promptly to maintain law and order.
He said the intervention was aimed at preventing a breakdown of order at the Secretariat.
The circumstances surrounding the Director’s death, including the allegations against the commissioner and his aides, remain matters requiring thorough investigation.
As workers await further directives from organised labour, attention is focused on the state government and security agencies to establish what transpired and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
