The Chief Press Secretary to the Delta State Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, has urged the newly elected executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, to prioritise unity, peace and professional responsibility while sustaining a cordial relationship with the state government.

Ahon made the appeal during a meeting with the newly elected executive, where he stressed that internal harmony was critical to effective leadership, the protection of journalists’ interests and the union’s contribution to the development of Delta State.

He said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori holds journalists and the NUJ in high regard, recognising the media’s role in promoting accountability, disseminating information and strengthening democratic governance.

The governor’s spokesman called for stronger collaboration between the media and government, urging members of the union to embrace mutual respect, love and cooperation in the interest of the state.

He assured the council of the state government’s continued partnership and support for its activities and members’ welfare, while encouraging the new leadership to uphold professional ethics and maintain the existing cordial relationship.

Ahon also urged the executive to address any disagreements through dialogue, mutual understanding and respect, cautioning against internal disputes capable of undermining the council’s unity and progress.

NUJ National Officers Seek Inclusive Leadership

The NUJ National Vice President, Zone F, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade John Angese, also called on the new executive to embrace inclusive leadership, improve internal communication and resolve differences through constructive engagement.

They maintained that divergent opinions should serve as an opportunity to strengthen the union rather than create divisions, urging the executive to promote teamwork, carry members along and place collective interests above personal differences.

Similarly, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Comrade Nkem Nwaeke, appealed to members to close ranks and work collectively towards improving journalists’ welfare and strengthening the union’s capacity to represent the profession.
