EFFURUN KILLING: Delta Police Move To Sanction Officer, Face Renewed Scrutiny Over Use Of Force

The Delta State Police Command has initiated disciplinary proceedings against an officer implicated in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, an incident that has intensified public concern over the use of force by law enforcement personnel.

The Command confirmed that the officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja to face disciplinary action following the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026.

According to the Police, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on intelligence indicating that the deceased was allegedly attempting to dispatch a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Officers were deployed to take the suspect into custody; however, the situation escalated when the team leader reportedly discharged his firearm.

The Command acknowledged that the action contravened established rules, including Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures governing the use of firearms.

Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as a clear case of extra-judicial conduct.

He directed the immediate arrest of the officer, who has since been queried and referred to the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.

While the swift administrative response signals an attempt at accountability, the incident has once again brought to the fore longstanding concerns about operational discipline and adherence to human rights standards within the Force.

The Command reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, professionalism, and the protection of human rights, maintaining that it operates a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and unlawful use of force.

CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued. He called on members of the public to remain calm as the disciplinary process unfolds.

However, observers note that beyond disciplinary assurances, the incident underscores the need for sustained reforms, stricter enforcement of engagement protocols, and improved training to prevent recurring cases of extra-judicial actions.

The outcome of the disciplinary proceedings is expected to serve as a critical test of the Police Command’s commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing misconduct within its ranks.
