BREAKING NEWS: “You Can’t Be Rivers Governor Whether You Support Tinubu” — Wike Issues Stark Warning To Fubara

In a striking political rebuke, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has delivered a pointed message to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, asserting that mere allegiance to President Bola Tinubu will not secure electoral success.

Wike’s remarks came during a public gathering in Emohua Local Government Area on Sunday and have been perceived as a direct shot at Fubara amid rising tensions within the state’s political landscape.

The former governor of Rivers State emphasized that true political loyalty is tested in challenging times, claiming that recent expressions of support for Tinubu are insufficient if not demonstrated when it mattered most.

He ridiculed those he termed “late supporters,” insisting that late alignment with the president would not yield political rewards.

“So the issue is not whether you are supporting Tinubu. That one, we have taken too long… Yes, oh. So Tinubu’s issue is not an issue again,” Wike declared, adding that mere declarations of support would not guarantee a political ticket, laughingly questioning their motivations.

Wike further defended his political camp’s early backing of Tinubu, highlighting their commitment during politically unpopular times.

He noted that support offered under duress holds greater significance than newfound alliances formed post-election.

He recounted how the Rivers State House of Assembly had openly championed Tinubu long before electoral outcomes were apparent, contrasting those early supporters with individuals now making late declarations.

“The same people now who came to declare… But they should declare they are saying it for a candidate,” he remarked, hinting at perceived opportunism among some leaders.

Alongside his critique, Wike addressed governance continuity, defending projects from his tenure and emphasizing the challenges successors face in recognizing previous administrations’ contributions.

These remarks come on the heels of Fubara’s recent alignment with the All Progressives Congress, the political party affiliated with President Tinubu, following months of unrest in Rivers State.

Political observers suggest Wike’s comments are a direct counter to Fubara’s recent role as a prominent ally of Tinubu in the region, raising questions about the sincerity of Fubara’s support amidst the turbulent backdrop of state politics.

Wike, a formidable figure in Rivers State despite his federal role, has drawn a clear line as the 2027 elections approach.

He asserted that the criteria for political nominations would hinge on demonstrated loyalty rather than convenience.

Videos from the event, which have rapidly circulated on social media, have led many to interpret Wike’s speech as a veiled warning to Fubara.

As of now, neither the Rivers State Government nor Wike’s media representatives have provided an official comment on the ongoing political rift, suggesting that tensions remain high, despite earlier efforts at reconciliation.
