Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State have reached a consensus on the emergence of Alhaji Abubakar Bawa as the new State Chairman of the party.
The decision was taken following a closed-door meeting held at the Government House, Jalingo, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, between key party stakeholders and the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas.
Alhaji Bawa, a former State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was unanimously elected by consensus after extensive consultations and strategic political engagements across the state.
Party sources described the development as the culmination of a broad-based reconciliation process and a network of consultations that ultimately produced a unified position among APC leaders and stakeholders statewide.
Notably, three former aspirants for the chairmanship position, Hon. Ali Sani Kona, Rt. Hon. Habu Isa Ajiya, and Hon. Hadi Lau, who had previously considered seeking legal redress over the state party congress, agreed to align with the consensus arrangement.
Their decision to withdraw plans to approach the court followed dialogue sessions with Governor Kefas, party elders, and other stakeholders.
The move is widely regarded as a major turning point in the Taraba APC State Congress process, which had earlier generated internal tensions.
Political observers note that the governor’s intervention and continued consultations played a significant role in fostering unity and preventing further divisions within the party structure.
It will be recalled that Governor Kefas officially defected from the PDP to the APC on January 31, 2026, alongside Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, members of his executive council, and local government chairmen across the state, a development that significantly reshaped the political landscape in Taraba State.
With his emergence, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa succeeds Barrister Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, who completed his second term as Taraba State APC Chairman and is currently contesting for the position of North-East Zonal Chairman of the party.
Party stakeholders have expressed optimism that the consensus-driven leadership transition will strengthen internal cohesion and reposition the APC for future political engagements in the state.
