…Senator Reassures Ndokwa Nation of Progress on Step-Down Project

Senator Prince Ned Nwoko has assured the people of Ndokwa Nation in Delta State of renewed federal attention to the long-delayed step-down of the Independent Power Project (IPP) located in the area.

This follows a peaceful protest on Tuesday at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, by the Step Down IPP Ndokwa Nation Movement, which decried what it described as years of neglect and marginalization despite hosting a major power facility.

The protesters lamented the injustice of living in darkness while electricity generated from their land powers the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and several states across Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the convener, Comrade Henry Franklyn, who was unavoidably absent, Dr. Francis Mbabie led the delegation to the National Assembly and presented the group’s demands to lawmakers.

He stressed the need for fairness, infrastructural justice, and equitable development for Ndokwa people.

Responding, Senator Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the IPP project fulfills its purpose for host communities.

He disclosed that he has already engaged the Minister of Power, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, and top executives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the matter.

The senator added that discussions are ongoing with the President and the Governor of Delta State to fast-track the step-down process.

Nwoko also reiterated his commitment to the creation of Anioma State, explaining that such a move would enhance political representation and development for the Ndokwa people, who would then have their own senator and other federal lawmakers.

He urged the protesters to remain patient and optimistic, assuring them that “meaningful progress” has been made toward achieving their demands.

The peaceful demonstration ended on a positive note, with participants expressing renewed confidence that the federal government will soon act to address the long-standing power injustice faced by Ndokwa communities.
