The Kaduna State Government has approved the reinstatement of 37 local government workers who were disengaged during the 2017 and 2018 staff exercise, bringing an end to nearly eight years of uncertainty for the affected employees.
The reinstatement, approved by Governor Uba Sani and implemented through the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, followed an administrative review which concluded that the earlier disengagement did not comply with due process and established principles of fairness.
Presenting reinstatement letters to the beneficiaries in Kaduna on Tuesday, Chairman of the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, Professor Aminu Ladan Sherehu, said the decision was taken after the review uncovered procedural irregularities in the exercise.
According to him, the governor’s approval reflects the administration’s commitment to justice, accountability and adherence to due process in public service administration.
“This action underscores His Excellency Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to correcting administrative injustices, upholding due process, and restoring confidence in our public service,” Sherehu said.
He noted that beyond addressing past grievances, the reinstatement would also strengthen local government administration by returning experienced personnel to the workforce, thereby enhancing grassroots governance and public service delivery.
The decision has received commendation from organised labour and civil society groups.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna State Council, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, described the move as a significant step towards protecting workers’ rights and resolving a longstanding labour dispute.
“This is a long-standing labour issue that has caused pain for many families. Governor Uba Sani has demonstrated leadership and respect for workers’ rights by addressing it head-on,” Suleiman said.
The reinstated workers expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the development as a turning point after years of unemployment and financial hardship.
One of the beneficiaries said the decision had restored hope to families affected by the prolonged disengagement, pledging that the workers would repay the government’s confidence through dedication, loyalty and professionalism.
Observers have also described the reinstatement as consistent with the Uba Sani administration’s emphasis on inclusive governance, institutional reforms and improved workers’ welfare.
The state government maintained that restoring experienced personnel to local government councils would help address manpower gaps and improve service delivery at the grassroots.
The 37 workers are expected to resume duties at their respective local government councils with immediate effect.
