President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a mark of national mourning, has directed that all flags across the country be flown at half-mast in honour of the late statesman.
In a further show of respect, the President has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s remains back to Nigeria for official burial rites.
President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria as a democratically elected President for two terms, from 2015 to 2023, after a distinguished earlier tenure as Military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
The passing of the former leader marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history, and tributes have continued to pour in from across the country and beyond, reflecting his impact on the nation’s governance and security architecture.
Further details regarding burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the federal government in coordination with the Buhari family.
Meanwhile, Tinubu has formally announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, June 13, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in London, following a prolonged illness.
In a solemn statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his deep sorrow over the loss and extended heartfelt condolences to the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and the entire Buhari family.
