In a robust rebuttal to recent allegations, Mustapha Salihu, the National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the North-East, has firmly stated that politicians defecting to the ruling party will not be exempted from investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Salihu addressed these contentious claims on Saturday night at a press conference in Yola, Adamawa State, asserting that the idea that joining the APC offers protection from corruption probes is a strategic attack aimed at undermining President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He emphasized the administration’s commitment to eradicating corruption, stating, “The notion that anyone can escape prosecution simply by joining APC is designed to blackmail this administration. This government has zero tolerance for corruption.”

His remarks come in the wake of accusations from former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who suggested that the APC has become a refuge for individuals evading EFCC scrutiny.

Salihu responded proactively, encouraging any citizens with credible evidence against APC members to submit formal petitions for investigation, assuring that accountability will be upheld.

Additionally, he revealed that certain members of the APC are already returning misappropriated funds, reiterating that the party will take action against any member found guilty of corruption, regardless of their political affiliation.

“Anyone that stole public funds will be prosecuted, even if you join APC, because corruption killed the economy of this country,” he affirmed.

In a wider political context, Salihu clarified the origins of the APC as a coalition aiming to displace former President Goodluck Jonathan, pointing out the party’s evolution and the departure of those with purely opportunistic motives.

He also expressed skepticism about the prospects of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), predicting that internal conflicts will soon lead to its dissolution.

Regarding speculation about Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri potentially joining the APC, Salihu stressed that political negotiations are conducted discreetly.

He expressed a willingness to welcome Fintiri into the party but maintained that such decisions should remain private.

This strong statement from the APC leadership underscores the party’s resolve to address corruption and maintain integrity within its ranks.
