Delta state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has terminated the contract for the Warri township stadium in Warri south local government area of the State.
The State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza on Thursday 23, May 2024, made this known to newsmen in Asaba, the State capital.
Osuoza said: “Exco terminated the renovation and rehabilitation of the contract for Warri township stadium in Warri south local government area”.
Dr. Osuoza, was flanked by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Reuben Izeze, (Urban and High Ways), Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary, to the governor, Prof. Tonukari Johnbull, Higher Education and Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN).
Giving details into what led to the repudiation of the contract, the Commissioner for Works, Urban and High Ways, Reuben Izeze, claimed that the State discovered that the contract firm handling the project lacks the ability to deliver the project within the specified time.
“As you are aware, His Excellency in the course of his inaugural address promised Deltans that the MORE AGENDA is going to be a working document.
“Asaba, will continue to receive its pride of place as our state capital and Warri, will also receive a facelift.
“Consequent upon that promise he made to Deltans, today, Exco approved the termination of the existing contract if the rehabilitation of the Warri stadium.
“Exco in its wisdom under the guidance of His Excellency, discovered that the contract firm handling the project do not have the technical-know-how to deliver that project.
“Therefore, that existing contract is terminated as of today. In due course you will be informed of the contractor that will be handling a modern Warri stadium that will be befitting of the ancient city of Warri”.
He threatened that the State government would have sued the contractor for time wastage because the contractor has breached the very fundamental part of the contract, “but you know, His Excellency, is a man who has a very nice heart.
“His Excellency, has decided to pay for verifiable work that has been done by the existing contractor, His Excellency, has magnanimously decided that once it is verified and certified, he would gladly support them with the amount that has been extended on the job which is about a hundred and few million that would be paid to the contractor”.
He disclosed that the actual contractual time for the contract was 24 months.
