President Bola Tinubu is reportedly preparing to intervene in the growing political disagreement between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a report by Politics Nigeria published on Friday, September 18, 2026, the proposed intervention could take place outside Nigeria before the end of the week, with Tinubu currently in France.
The publication quoted a senior presidential aide familiar with the development as saying the President is expected to engage the parties in an effort to resolve their differences and prevent the dispute from affecting political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disagreement centres largely on Wike’s reported political mobilisation under the Rainbow Coalition, through which he has been supporting Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid while maintaining his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike has maintained that supporting Tinubu does not amount to joining the APC or committing himself to supporting the party’s candidates in other elections.
The position has, however, drawn opposition from sections of the APC, including governors who insist that the party’s structures and candidates should remain central to its 2027 campaign.
The APC Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, recently stated that its members would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the APC or adversely affecting its candidates.
The development has further heightened tensions between Wike and some APC governors, particularly Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Wike has accused the governors of attempting to frustrate his political activities, while also arguing that his support for Tinubu should not automatically translate into support for APC candidates at the state and legislative levels.
He subsequently denied approaching the APC Governors’ Forum for an alliance, insisting that his support for the President was distinct from his position on other electoral contests.
According to the presidential aide quoted by Politics Nigeria, Tinubu is expected to seek a truce between the minister and the governors.
«“President Tinubu will intervene in the face-off between the All Progressives Congress governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,” the aide was quoted as saying.»
The aide added that the proposed intervention would seek to resolve the differences and ensure that the parties work together ahead of the 2027 elections.
The reported move comes amid calls within the APC for the President to personally intervene in the dispute.
Meanwhile, former House Minority Leader Farouk Adamu-Aliyu has criticised Wike’s approach to the disagreement, arguing that the minister should not use his relationship with Tinubu to influence the internal affairs of the APC.
However, the dispute has also attracted voices within the ruling party who have defended Wike’s support for Tinubu.
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, recently described Wike as an asset to the ruling party despite his continued membership of the PDP.
The APC South-East caucus has also weighed in on the controversy, backing the governors and calling on Wike to apologise over comments directed at some APC leaders.
