The factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Dr. Nname Ewor, has formally collapsed his faction into the Aaron Chukwemeka–led caretaker committee, a structure openly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, effectively deepening the political realignment within the party.
Ewor, who was previously aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, announced the dissolution of his faction during Wike’s “Thank You” visit to Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area on Tuesday.
Declaring an end to parallel leadership within the party, Ewor said he was relinquishing control of his faction in favour of the Wike-supported leadership.
“Today, I am handing over the chairmanship and leadership of my faction to the Aaron Chukwemeka–led caretaker committee.
“PDP is no longer factionalised in Rivers State. PDP is under one chairman and one leadership, and that leadership is the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike,” he stated.
In a sharp rebuke of the Rivers State governor, Ewor said his decision to abandon the Fubara camp was driven by what he described as a lack of trust in the governor’s leadership.
He further alleged that President Bola Tinubu intervened twice in efforts to resolve the political crisis rocking the state, claiming that Governor Fubara failed to honour the terms of the peace agreements.
“If the President mediated twice and the agreements were not kept, then that means the person cannot be trusted. Can such a leader be trusted? We cannot trust him,” Ewor said.
Ewor also dismissed claims by Governor Fubara that Wike was intimidating or frustrating his administration, insisting that the former governor had done nothing to undermine his office.
Earlier at the event, the Chairman of ONELGA, Mr. Chukwu Ogbogu, commended Wike for visiting the area and engaging directly with the people.
He also praised the minister for development projects executed in the local government during his tenure as governor of Rivers State.
The latest defection marks a significant political setback for Governor Fubara and further consolidates Wike’s grip on the PDP structure in Rivers State, raising fresh questions about the party’s internal cohesion ahead of future elections.
