Kano State’s political landscape was jolted on Monday as Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, abruptly resigned from office, ending his tenure as a member of the Kano State Executive Council in a move that has sent ripples through the state’s already tense political environment.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday, January 26, 2026, through a statement personally signed by Kwankwaso and shared on his official Facebook page.
Describing the decision as one taken with a “heavy heart,” the former commissioner announced the end of his service in the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the great people of Kano State. It has been a privilege to work for the progress of our dear state,” Kwankwaso said.
While reflecting on his tenure, Kwankwaso noted that his time in office was marked by valuable experiences and lessons that would remain with him beyond government service.
However, he did not disclose the specific reasons behind his resignation.
Addressing the future of the youth and sports sector, the former commissioner expressed hope that government attention and support for young people in the state would continue uninterrupted.
“As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve.
“I am confident that sports development programmes and initiatives in the state will continue to grow and succeed,” he stated.
Kwankwaso concluded his message with prayers for Kano State and its leadership, asking Allah to bless the state and grant the government success in delivering good governance to its people.
His resignation comes amid significant political developments in Kano State, particularly following reports of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move said to be against the wishes of his political mentor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
The development further deepens the unfolding political realignments within the Kano State Government, as observers anticipate more changes in the days ahead.
