Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has made a startling disclosure, asserting that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, actually won the presidential election in Rivers State.
Speaking on Saturday during an X Space discussion, Amaechi said, “I can agree with you to some extent that Obi won Rivers State, but I don’t know how the results were changed.”
His statement reignites debate over the February 2023 presidential election in Rivers State, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.
In a further revelation during the discussion, Amaechi disclosed that he and former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, initiated behind-the-scenes talks that birthed a formidable opposition coalition now gearing up to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
According to him, the initial private conversation between himself and Fayemi soon expanded to include heavyweight political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Others are former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal and Boss Mustapha, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, among others.
The coalition has since adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform, signalling what could be a seismic shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
