The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has stressed the need for all public primary schools in the state to strictly adhere to all COVID-19 safety Protocols as part of measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic in schools in Delta State.

The member representing Delta South Senatorial District in the Board, Mr. Paul Kurugbe stated this on Friday at Koko, headquarters of Warri north local government area at the end of a 5-day monitoring exercise to public primary schools in the Senatorial District.

Mr. Kurugbe who disclosed that the monitoring exercise was to ensure that primary six pupils who were having their classes as at the time of the visit in preparation of the First School Leaving Certificate Examination that held on Saturday, was done in accordance to all laid down safety protocols as announced by the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

Speaking further on the reason for the 5-days monitoring exercise, the Board member stated that it was to also ascertain the level of teachers compliance with the directive for resumption.

On some of the safety measures put in place by the State Government for re-opening of schools which include that of sitting arrangement of not more than twenty pupils in a classroom, observance of  social distancing, wearing of face masks and regular washing of hands as well as use of alcohol based hand sanitizers, Mr. Kurugbe expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by both teachers and pupils to the COVID-19 safety protocols in all the schools visited.

He, however,  decried some teacher’s attitude to work that bothered on absenteeism, lateness to work and closing before government approved time.

While commending some of the teachers for their dedication and commitment to duty, the Board member appreciated mostly primary six teachers responding to the clarion call and for preparing the pupils adequately for their common entrance examination and urged them to continue to display exemplary conducts for their pupils to emulate, saying the future of every child rests mainly on the teachers.

He assured parents and guardians that the Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s led administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that necessary facilities and teaching aids were made available in schools to aid learning as well as to promote the quality of education in the State. 

Over 16 Public Primary Schools that cut across the  eight local government areas in Delta South senatorial district were visited by the monitoring team.
