Stakeholders in the health sector has called on the federal government to enact national policy that would take care of challenges in the health sector.

Delta State governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday noted that the country could turn the Coronavirus pandemic into opportunity that would be beneficial to the country.

The governor stated this at the 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), in Abraka, Ethiope east local government area of the state.

According to the governor, “We can turn this #COVID19 crisis into an opportunity.

“In my remarks, I noted that with an abysmal 0.5% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) going into public health financing, we have one of the lowest public healthcare financing systems in the world.

“This is why, I am calling for a national policy on responding and managing public health crises. Such a policy must bolster our health infrastructure, expand our overall capacity and upgrade our manpower in the healthcare sector.

“It is only by taking preemptive measures such as this, that we will be better positioned to protect all Nigerian citizens in the event of any future outbreaks”, Dr. Okowa, stressed.
